Isolation often increases with age as loved ones and friends pass away and people's mobility decreases. Being lonely can increase risk of being unhealthy behaviours like a poor diet, smoking and lack of exercise. It can also increase depression and decrease cognition. To help the elderly that might be lonely try talking to them when you see them, offer to become friends and help out at your local care home if you can. Sometimes all a person needs to make their day better is a friendly smile and a chat. You could also offer to help out at some amazing charities like Age Uk, stroke association and dementia awareness which focus on helping the elderly.
